If you've woken up in the dark more than once, this is for you
There are few things more frustrating than a power cut in the middle of the night for no apparent reason. The RCD has tripped, the house is in darkness and you have no idea what caused it. You switch it back on, everything works normally and the next day it happens again.
If this situation sounds familiar, you are not alone. It is one of the most frequent enquiries we receive at Iluminamos tu Vida, and the good news is that it almost always has a clear explanation.
Why does the RCD trip more often at night?
The RCD does not distinguish between day and night, but it does react to what is happening in the installation at any given moment. And at night, specific things happen that do not happen during the day.
The most common occurrence is that an appliance enters automatic operating mode while you are asleep. The programmed washing machine, the dishwasher, the electric water heater, the heating or the air conditioning that kicks in to maintain the temperature... any of these devices can have a small earth leakage that goes unnoticed during the day but at night, when everything else is switched off, is enough for the RCD to detect it and trip.
The cold and damp also play a part
Another factor that many people do not take into account is temperature. At night, especially in winter, ambient humidity increases. If there is any point in the installation with damaged insulation or a junction box in a damp area, that moisture can generate small current leakages that trip the RCD.
It is something that happens more frequently in older homes, in areas near the kitchen or bathroom, or in houses with damp walls that affect the wiring.
How to identify which appliance is causing it
If you want to try to locate it before calling an electrician, there is a simple trick. When the RCD trips, before resetting it, unplug all appliances that might be running automatically at night. Then reset it and see if it holds. If it does, plug them back in one by one with a couple of hours between each one until it trips again. The last one you plugged in before the trip is the culprit.
Note: this works well for locating a faulty appliance, but if the RCD keeps tripping even when nothing is plugged in, the problem lies within the installation itself and requires a professional inspection.
When is it time to wait no longer?
If the residual current device keeps tripping for several nights in a row, if when you reset it it doesn't hold for even a few minutes, or if along with the electrical problem you notice a burning smell, heat at some point on the wall or sparks when handling a plug, don't leave it for later. Those kinds of signs indicate that the fault is more serious and that you should have an electrician check it as soon as possible.
A repeatedly tripping RCD is not just an annoyance, it is the installation warning you that something is not right. Ignoring it for weeks does not fix it and can make the problem worse.
What we do at Iluminamos tu Vida in these cases
When we are called for this reason, the first thing to do is carry out a diagnosis to identify whether the source is a specific appliance or the wiring/installation. With that information, the solution is usually quick and simple. In most cases it is resolved in a single visit.
