It depends on where it is and what condition it is in. We can help you value it.
Finding a bare wire at home triggers a pretty instinctive reaction: it commands respect. But not all bare wires represent the same level of risk, and knowing how to distinguish when it is a real emergency and when it can wait a few days helps you to act calmly and without unnecessary stress.
What is certainly clear is that a bare wire is never something that should be ignored indefinitely. Sooner or later it has to be sorted.
Not all stripped wires are the same
The first thing is to understand what type of cable it is and where it is. A table lamp cable with a frayed outer plastic sheath but intact internal wires is not the same as a fixed wall installation cable with completely deteriorated insulation and exposed conductors.
It also matters a great deal whether the wire is live, meaning whether it is connected to the mains, or whether it is a wire that is disconnected. A frayed wire that is not connected to anything poses no immediate risk, although it still needs to be fixed before it is used again.
When is it actually urgent?
There are situations where it is not advisable to wait. If the stripped wire is live and the conductors are exposed, there is a real risk of electric shock if someone touches it, especially if there are children or pets at home. In that case, the most sensible thing to do is to disconnect that circuit from the consumer unit until it can be sorted out.
If the stripped cable is in a damp area such as the kitchen or bathroom, the risk increases considerably. Moisture and electricity are a dangerous combination, and in such environments any deterioration of the insulation deserves immediate attention.
It is also urgent if the cable shows signs of having been generating heat: blackened insulation, a burning smell in the area or burn marks on the nearby surface. This indicates that a problem has already occurred and that it could happen again.
When can you expect a few days?
If the cable belongs to an appliance or a lamp, it is in a dry area, there are no exposed conductors and you can simply stop using that device in the meantime, it can wait a few days for an electrician to check it or for you to buy a replacement cable if it is a simple household appliance.
In that case, the most sensible provisional measure is not to use the affected appliance or light fitting until it is resolved. It is not a permanent solution, but it eliminates the risk while you wait.
How do you fix it?
It depends on the type of cable and where it is. A damaged lamp or appliance cable can be replaced with a new one without needing to call an electrician, as long as you know what you are doing and the appliance is unplugged.
A cable from the fixed domestic electrical installation is a different matter. That is when you do need an electrician, because tampering with the installation wiring without the appropriate knowledge can cause more problems than it solves. Furthermore, any work on the fixed installation must be done properly so as not to create a weak spot that will cause problems in the future.
