Before you start choosing tiles, there is an electric question that is worth answering
When someone decides to remodel the bathroom, their mind immediately goes to the materials: the type of floor, the color of the tiles, whether to install a bathtub or a shower tray. The electrical installation is usually the last thing on their mind, yet it is one of the most important decisions of the entire renovation.
At Iluminamos tu Vida we work with many clients in Madrid who are renovating their bathrooms and discover in the middle of the renovation that the electrical wiring is not ready for what they want to install. Anticipating this saves time, money, and unpleasantries.
Why is the bathroom especially demanding with the electrical installation?
The bathroom is the most demanding room in the house in terms of electrical requirements. The combination of water and electricity requires specific protections that are not necessary in other rooms. Regulations establish protection zones within the bathroom and require that each light fixture, plug, or appliance installed in these areas have the appropriate degree of protection against moisture.
In addition, modern bathrooms consume much more water than those of twenty years ago. An electric water heater, an electric towel rack, a hair dryer, a hydromassage shower or a forced ventilation system are devices that were not included in the old installations and that can easily exceed the capacity of the existing system.
Signs that the picture needs to be updated before the reform
If your home’s wiring is old, has few automatic outlets, or doesn’t have a dedicated circuit for the bathroom, remodeling is the ideal time to update it. Not because the regulations require it in all cases, but because with the walls open, the work is much simpler and cheaper than doing it later.
If the bathroom you are going to renovate will have more electrical appliances than before, an electric radiant floor, recessed lighting in wet areas, or a ventilation system, the existing circuit may be insufficient and require expansion or reinforcement.
What should the electrical installation of a renovated bathroom include?
A properly renovated bathroom should have an independent circuit with its own automatic control panel, high-sensitivity differential protection, lighting fixtures with the appropriate IP protection rating according to their distance from the water, and plugs placed at the minimum regulatory distance from the edge of the bathtub or shower.
If the bathroom is going to have an electric radiant floor, that system needs its own additional circuit. If it is going to have an electric heater, too. Every high-consumption element must be properly designed from the drawing board so that the installation is safe and durable.
The best time to do it is during the construction phase.
Bathroom renovation is the only occasion when the walls are open and electrical work can be done without destroying the finishes. Taking that moment to review and update what is necessary in the plumbing and circuit of the bathroom is a decision that is always worth making.
Doing it later, after the bathroom is finished, involves lifting tiles, opening grout lines, and re-finishing. The cost and inconvenience are much higher. That’s why at Iluminamos tu Vida we always recommend including the electrical inspection as part of the bathroom renovation project from the very beginning.
