Bedroom lighting: how to have the perfect light for sleeping, reading, and getting ready

You don't need a ceiling lamp and that's it. Here's how to light your bedroom well without making life complicated

The bedroom is often the room that receives the least attention when it comes to lighting. A lamp is put on the ceiling, a switch is placed by the door, and that's that. But if you've ever tried to read in bed with that single light, or realised that turning on the ceiling light at ten at night doesn't exactly help you relax, you know there's room for improvement.

At Iluminamos tu Vida, we design bedroom lighting in Madrid with how the space is actually used in mind: for resting, getting ready, reading, or watching a series. Each activity requires a different type of light, and with good planning, you can have it all without it being complicated.

The problem of the single central lamp

A single lamp in the centre of the ceiling illuminates the bedroom quite flatly and uniformly, which is fine for finding your way around or making the bed. But that same light is too intense if you want to read quietly before sleeping, and it's not much use if you need to illuminate yourself well in front of the mirror to get ready.

The solution is neither complicated nor necessarily expensive: it involves adding smaller, more targeted light sources to complement the general lighting, allowing you to choose what to switch on according to your needs at any given moment.

The bedside lamp: essential for reading without disturbing

If there's one thing that makes a huge difference to bedroom comfort, it's having an individual light on each side of the bed. It doesn't have to be anything elaborate: it could be a bedside lamp, a wall sconce, or an adjustable spotlight. The important thing is that the light falls on the book or screen without illuminating the whole room.

So, if one person wants to read and the other sleep, each can have their own light without disturbing the other. It's a small detail that is greatly appreciated in daily life.

The ceiling light: better if it can be dimmed

If you have the option to put a dimmer switch on your ceiling light, it's one of the best investments you can make in a bedroom. Being able to gradually lower the light at night before sleeping helps the body prepare for rest much more naturally than going from full brightness to complete darkness.

Colour temperature also matters. Warm light, with a more yellowish hue, creates a much more relaxed feeling than white or cool light. For the bedroom, the warmer the better.

Lighting for getting ready: making it easier

If your bedroom has a mirror or a dressing table, you need good lighting in that area. The worst thing that can happen is having the light behind you or above your head when you're trying to see yourself in the mirror: shadows make it almost impossible to get ready properly.

A light coming from in front of or from the sides of the mirror, even if it's small, completely solves this problem. At Iluminamos tu Vida, we always ask about the use of the mirror when planning bedroom lighting because it's one of those details that seems minor and then turns out to be used every day.

Is a major reform needed to achieve this?

Not necessarily. Many of these improvements can be made with small interventions: adding a couple of light points, installing a dimmer switch, or changing the central light for something warmer. At Iluminamos tu Vida, we value each case to propose the most practical and efficient solution, without doing more than is necessary.
