When is picture frame noise harmless and when should you call an electrician without delay
The electrical consumer unit normally doesn't make noise. Therefore, when it starts to emit a sound, even a quiet one, it's natural for it to grab attention and raise doubts. Is it serious? Does something need to be done? Can it wait?
At Iluminamos tu Vida, we receive many enquiries in Madrid for this reason, and the answer depends a lot on the type of noise. Some are completely harmless, others warrant prompt attention, and some require calling an emergency electrician.
A soft, constant hum: usually not urgent
A soft hum that doesn't vary with time is usually the normal vibration of one of the frame's components, especially in older frames. Automatics, when they've been around for many years, sometimes start to vibrate slightly. It's not ideal, but it's not necessarily dangerous either.
However, if the humming is new, has appeared suddenly, or has gradually increased in intensity, it's worth mentioning to an electrician at your next service so they can take a look.
A click or a spark: this does require attention
If the noise you hear is a click, a small dry knock, or something that sounds like a spark, that already warrants checking as soon as possible. That type of sound usually indicates a loose connection within the casing where the current is jumping from one conductor to another.
That is called an electric arc and it can generate a lot of heat in a very localised area. It's not something that explodes immediately, but it's also not something that should be ignored for weeks because it can degrade the insulation of the cables or the components of the box itself.
Heat alongside the noise: call now
If the noise is accompanied by the distribution board lid feeling hot, a smell of burning plastic, or you notice things getting unusually warm nearby, don't delay. Turn off the main breaker if you can do so safely and call an emergency electrician.
The heat inside a panel is always a sign that something is working under incorrect conditions, be it a deteriorated connection, an overloaded component, or an internal fault. In these situations, speed matters.
A click that repeats at specific times
Some panels have a programmer clock or a contactor for managing hourly electricity rates. These devices make a click when they activate and another when they deactivate, and if you didn't know, it can sound odd the first time you hear it.
If the click always happens at the same time, especially in the early morning or late evening, it is probably the tariff clock. It is not a problem. But if the click is irregular, very frequent or its frequency changes, it warrants investigation.
How to describe the noise to the electrician
When you call to consult, please try to describe the noise as best you can: whether it's continuous or intermittent, if it varies depending on which appliances you have on, if it appeared suddenly or has been happening for a while, and if it's accompanied by heat, smell, or any other symptoms. This information is very helpful in guiding the diagnosis before your visit.
At "En Iluminamos tu Vida", we handle these types of queries in Madrid and can give you an initial assessment over the phone before a visit. If we need to come out, we will, and if it can wait for a review on the day, we'll let you know that too.
