A plug has fried itself: what do I do right now

Quick guide to acting well in the first few minutes and preventing the problem from escalating

You open the room and there’s a strange smell, or you notice a black stain on the socket, or you simply touch it and it’s hotter than normal. A burnt-out socket is intimidating, and rightly so. But if you know how to act, you can handle it calmly and without risk.

At En Iluminamos tu Vida, we handle these types of situations as electrical emergencies in Madrid, and the first thing we always tell our clients is the same: stay calm and don't touch anything until we know what's happened.

First: disconnect and move away

If there's anything plugged into that socket, unplug it. Don't do it by grabbing the cable, do it by carefully pulling the plug of the appliance itself. Then, go to the electrical consumer unit and switch off the circuit breaker for that area, usually the one for the sockets in that room.

If you don't know which one it is, you can switch off the main circuit breaker to be completely sure. It's better to have the lights off in one part of the house than to have the circuit live with a damaged socket.

Signs you need to call an electrician immediately

If the socket only has a slight mark and there is no lingering smell or heat from the wall, you can wait for an electrician to check it out during the day. But if there are any of these signs, call as soon as possible:

  • A burnt smell that won't go away, even though you've unplugged everything
  • The wall around the socket is hot
  • There are black marks beyond the plug itself
  • The circuit breaker trips as soon as you try to switch it back on.
  • Do you see a spark or hear a click

In any of those cases, do not try to re-energise that circuit. The problem could be inside the wall, in the wiring, and is not visible from the outside.

Why does a plug burn out?

The most frequent cause is having had a high-consumption appliance, such as a heater, iron, or hairdryer, connected for a long time to a socket that was not designed for that continuous load. Over time, the internal contacts deteriorate and it starts to generate heat.

It can also happen due to using a power strip with too many devices plugged in, an old socket with worn contacts, or a temporary fault in the appliance that was connected.

Can it be repaired or does the whole system need to be replaced?

In most cases, replacing the plug and ensuring that the wiring for that socket is in good condition is sufficient. It's not necessarily a symptom of a bigger problem, although it is worth having an electrician take a general look at the circuit to rule out any other weak points.

At Iluminamos tu Vida, we carry out these types of repairs with an included inspection so you can rest assured that everything is in order. If you are in Madrid and have experienced this problem, give us a call.
