The hallway is that space that nobody pays much attention to when decorating or renovating a home, and yet it is where you walk dozens of times a day. A dark hallway makes the whole home look smaller and less welcoming, whereas a well-lit one completely changes the first impression the house gives.<\/span><\/p>\n The good thing is that improving the lighting in a hallway doesn't always require building work or major interventions. There are options for every case and every budget.<\/span><\/p>\n Most hallways have a single bulb in the ceiling, sometimes with a traditional glass shade, which gives a poor and uneven light. As the corridor is usually narrow and long, this single light source does not reach the ends properly and leaves areas in semi-darkness.<\/span><\/p>\n Furthermore, the corridors rarely have windows, so they rely entirely on artificial light. That means the lighting you have is all the light there is going to be, and if it is not sufficient or well distributed, there is no natural way to compensate for it.<\/span><\/p>\n If you don't want to carry out building work, there are several solutions that can greatly improve the situation without needing to touch the existing wiring.<\/span><\/p>\n The first is simply to change the current bulb for one with a higher luminous flux and appropriate colour temperature. A neutral or slightly warm light LED bulb with sufficient lumens can transform a dark hallway without doing absolutely anything else.<\/span><\/p>\n Another option is sensor guide lights, those small plug-in light fixtures that switch on by themselves when they detect movement or when the light is low. They are especially useful at night for moving around without having to switch on the main light, and they do not require any installation.<\/span><\/p>\n Adhesive LED strip lights can also be an interesting solution in hallways. Placed along the skirting board or under a piece of furniture, they create indirect, floor-level lighting that gives a sense of spaciousness and is very useful at night without being dazzling.<\/span><\/p>\n If you want a more polished and permanent result, adding ceiling spotlights or wall sconces makes a huge difference. Several small spotlights distributed along the hallway provide much more even lighting than a single one in the centre, and wall sconces add warmth and create a greater sense of space.<\/span><\/p>\n This does require an electrician to do the installation, but it isn't a major piece of work. In most cases it can be done in a few hours without the need to paint or retile anything afterwards.<\/span><\/p>\n One of the best decisions you can make for the hallway is to install a motion sensor that automatically turns the light on when someone walks past and switches it off by itself after a while.
