When someone decides to paint a room, they usually think a lot about the color of the wall and very little about how that color will look with the light in the space. And yet, the lighting completely changes how a color is perceived. The same tone can look beautiful with a warm light and muted, or strange with a cold light.<\/span><\/p>\n If you're thinking of painting a room in your home, this article can save you from an unpleasant surprise when you see the final result.<\/span><\/p>\n Light is not neutral. Each bulb emits light with a specific tone, and that tone interacts with the color of the surface it illuminates. A blue wall illuminated with warm yellow light can turn greenish. A white wall with cold light can appear almost bluish. A gray wall with warm light can gain warmth and appear almost beige.<\/span><\/p>\n This is not a defect of the paint or the bulb; it is simply a physical issue. That is why interior designers always recommend seeing the paint samples in the real space and with the real light before making a final decision.<\/span><\/p>\n White or very light-colored walls are the ones that most show the type of light. With warm light, pure white can turn slightly cream or yellowish, which gives warmth but may not be what you were looking for. With cool light, the same white remains very pure and clean but can make the space feel cold and clinical.<\/span><\/p>\n For white walls, a neutral or slightly warm light is usually the most pleasant balance. It allows the white to appear as white without the space losing its warmth.<\/span><\/p>\n Earth tones, beige, soft browns and ocher are colors that go especially well with warm light. The combination creates a very cozy and natural atmosphere, similar to that of a country house or a space with lots of wood. If you\u2019re looking for that effect, warm light and walls in this range are a sure bet.<\/span><\/p>\n With cold light, these colors can become dull and lose all their charm. If you have a room with earth-tone walls and the light doesn\u2019t favor them, sometimes it\u2019s enough to change the bulbs to notice a huge difference.<\/span><\/p>\n Cool colors like blues, greens, and grays work best with neutral or even slightly cool light. With very warm light, these tones can lose their identity and become strange, especially the blues that can veer towards green.<\/span><\/p>\n If you have decided on a wall in one of these shades and want the color to look true and clean, a neutral light between 3,500K and 4,000K is the best option.<\/span><\/p>\n Before painting the entire room, buy a small can of paint and paint a large swatch on the wall, at least half a square meter. Observe it at different times of the day and at night with the artificial light you have.
