If your frame is a certain age or is giving you trouble, this article will help you know if it's time to change it.
The electrical panel is that little box in the hallway or entrance of the home that we only pay attention to when the circuit breaker trips. But it's the centre of the entire house's electrical installation, and when it's obsolete or in poor condition, the effects are noticed everywhere.
At Iluminamos tu Vida, we update electrical fuse boxes in Madrid daily, and most of the time, homeowners tell us the same thing: they had been noticing small problems for a while but hadn't taken the step because they didn't know if it was really necessary. In this article, we give you the signs that indicate it is.
How old is your painting?
This is the first question. If you've been in the same property for over twenty or twenty-five years without touching the electrical installation, it's very likely that the fuse box is out of date. Not necessarily because time breaks it, but because protection technology has improved a lot and household consumption has changed radically.
A fuse box from thirty years ago was designed for a home with much lower consumption: no electric heating, fewer appliances, no constant charging. Today, that same fuse box is managing much more than it was designed to handle.
Signs that the painting needs changing
The clearest sign is that the differential trips frequently with no apparent cause. If this happens to you more than once or twice a month without you having a faulty appliance or an obvious overload, the problem could be with the fuse box itself.
Another sign is if the fuse box has old-fashioned fuses, the porcelain ones with a lead wire inside, instead of modern circuit breakers. Those fuses are much less accurate and much less safe. If you have those at home, it's worth considering an upgrade without delay.
If the casing is hot to the touch, if any components are burnt, if it makes any strange noises, or if there are signs of deteriorated insulation, these are all indications that action needs to be taken with some urgency.
What if my painting looks fine, but it's antique?
A fuse box that apparently works well, but is twenty or more years old, may be managing the installation correctly, but without the protections required by current regulations. Nowadays, fuse boxes must have independent circuits for each zone, high-sensitivity residual current devices, and circuit breakers calibrated for each use… things that older fuse boxes simply didn't have.
This does not mean you have to change it urgently if there are no visible problems, but it does mean that it is advisable to have an electrician check it and give you a real opinion on its condition.
How much does it cost to change the fuse box?
The cost depends on the size of the property and how many circuits need to be installed or updated. For a standard property in Madrid, a full fuse board replacement with correctly sized protective devices can be approximately between €600 and €1,500, depending on the specific case.
It's a worthwhile investment if the fuse box is causing problems or if you have a very old installation. At Iluminamos tu Vida, we provide no-obligation quotes. If you're unsure whether your fuse box needs replacing, we can inspect it and give you an honest opinion.
