A practical guide to lighting the outdoor spaces of your home so you can enjoy them at night too
Having a well-lit patio or garden is one of those things that seems like a luxury until you have it and can’t imagine how you lived without it. Being able to dine al fresco, have a pleasant evening, or simply enjoy the outdoors when it gets dark completely changes the way you use that space.
But when you start thinking about lighting up a terrace or garden, doubts immediately arise: what type of light should I use? Is construction necessary? What happens if it rains? At Iluminamos tu Vida we have helped many clients in Madrid resolve exactly these questions, and in this article, we aim to give you a clear starting point.
The first thing: define what you want the light for
Wanting to illuminate a patio for al fresco dining is not the same as wanting to create an atmosphere in a garden with trees and seating areas. Before thinking about what type of lighting fixtures to buy, it's most useful to define what you're going to use the space for at night.
Do you want enough light for dining and moving around comfortably? Do you want to create a cosy atmosphere with ambient lighting? Are you interested in illuminating the facade or a specific tree? With that clear, it's much easier to choose the right solution and not overspend.
What types of outdoor lighting are there?
For terraces and gardens, there are various options that can be combined. Ceiling lights or wall lights are the most common for covered terraces: they provide sufficient general light for dining or relaxing. Garden bollards, which are small light posts that are driven into the ground or placed on edges, are ideal for marking paths or bordering lawn areas. Adjustable spotlights on the ground or wall can be used to illuminate trees, plants, or decorative elements. And LED strips under pergolas, beams, or railings create a beautiful and cosy ambient light.
There's no need to do it all at once. Sometimes two or three well-chosen points are more than enough to transform an exterior.
Are outdoor light fixtures different to indoor ones?
Yes, and it's important not to confuse them. Outdoor light fittings are designed to withstand rain, cold, heat, and dust. They have a special protection rating that guarantees they are not affected by humidity or water. If you put an indoor lamp on the patio, it might work for a while, but it will eventually cause problems.
When you buy or are offered exterior light fittings, check that they are marked ‘IP44’ or higher. This means that they are suitable for outdoor use. Those directly exposed to the rain need an even higher protection rating.
Is any building work needed to fit lights on the terrace?
It depends. If there's already a light point or socket on your terrace, many solutions can be installed without opening walls. If you want to illuminate the garden with ground-level lights or lights along a path, some underground or surface electrical installation with conduits will be necessary.
At Iluminamos tu Vida, we undertake exterior lighting projects in Madrid of all scopes, from adding a ceiling light to a terrace to designing the complete lighting for a garden.
