With the right lighting, a small bathroom can feel much more spacious and pleasant. Here's how.
A small bathroom with poor lighting can become very uncomfortable. The feeling of being cramped, of everything being on top of you, of there being no space… often has more to do with the light than with the actual square footage. And that's good news, because lighting is something that can be changed without knocking down walls.
At ‘Iluminamos tu Vida’ (We Light Up Your Life), we've transformed bathrooms that property owners described as 'dark and small' simply by changing the way they were lit. A complete renovation isn't necessary to notice a huge difference.
The most common mistake: a single bulb on the ceiling
Most small bathrooms have a single light in the centre of the ceiling. The problem with this solution is that it creates shadows precisely where you need them most: on your face when you're in front of the mirror. If the light comes from above, your own head casts a shadow on your face. Applying makeup, shaving, or simply looking good becomes complicated.
Additionally, a single ceiling light doesn't utilise any visual tricks to make the space feel larger. It illuminates the floor and the centre of the room, but leaves the corners in shadow, making the space appear smaller than it is.
First: light the mirror well
If you can only improve one thing about your bathroom lighting, make it the mirror area. Light that illuminates your face from the front, whether with a side sconce, a light bar above the mirror, or a mirror with integrated lighting, completely changes the bathroom experience.
It doesn't have to be a complex installation. There are mirrors with integrated LED lighting that simply hang and plug into a socket. If you want something more integrated and permanent, wall lights on either side of the mirror with neutral white bulbs are the classic solution that works best.
Indirect light works wonders in small spaces
One of the most effective ways to make a bathroom appear larger is to use indirect lighting. An LED strip behind the mirror, under the vanity unit or in a niche creates a halo of light that gives a sense of depth and spaciousness without taking up any room.
This type of lighting is neither expensive nor difficult to install, and the visual effect it creates is truly striking. In small bathrooms, it’s a solution we almost always use in the projects we undertake at Iluminamos tu Vida, because the difference is immediately apparent.
What light temperature is best for the bathroom?
For the bathroom, bright white light, not yellowish, is most recommended. This is called neutral or cool light, and it ensures that skin tones appear true to life and that the space feels clean and uncluttered. Light that is too warm and yellowish in the bathroom can distort tones and make it difficult to see yourself clearly.
If you have a bath or shower area where you prefer a more relaxed atmosphere, you can combine temperatures: cooler light on the mirror and something warmer in that area. The contrast is noticeable and each part of the bathroom serves its purpose better.
Do I need an electrician to improve the bathroom lighting?
It depends on what you want to change. If you want to put up a mirror with a light or a plug-in lamp, no. If you want to add integrated ceiling lights or install LED strips with their own switch, you will need an electrician to do the installation. At "Iluminamos tu Vida" (We Light Up Your Life), we carry out bathroom lighting projects in Madrid of all sizes, from a small improvement to a complete project.
